How to Install and Setup ADB and Fastboot on Windows

ADB or Android Debug Bridge helps you to connect your Android device to the computer and perform various system levels tasks like unlocking bootloader, installing custom ROMs, changing ROMs, and lot more. Here, in this article, you will find how to download, install and setup ADB and Fastboot on your Windows computer.

Android is an open-source platform and comes with tons of customization abilities. If you are someone who likes to tweak and play around with Android then you will need ADB drivers installed on your computer. By default, there will be some restrictions set on your device, you can unlock the bootloader and do some tiny tweaks to get rid of it.

For now, let’s jump right into the installation procedure. If you want to know more about this and how it works, you can find it at the bottom of the article.

This will work with every versions of Windows including, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10.

How to setup ADB and Fastboot on Windows

ADB and Fastboot drivers are not like installing any other software, but it is easy. Apart from installing it, we need to set path variables and make other configurations to make things work. First of all, you will have to download the necessary installer files.

Once you have downloaded all the necessary files, let’s get started.

Getting Your Android Smartphone Ready

There are a couple of things that you need to do in your smartphone to get this rolling. The first thing is that you need to enable developer options and the second thing is to enable USB Debugging. Both of these could be easily done.

  • Go to Settings > About phone
  • Here, tap on the “Build number” seven times. Now, developer options will be enabled.
  • If you are using a smartphone with MIUI, then tap on the MIUI version number for seven times.

Enable USB Debugging

  • Once the Developer option is enabled, you will now find a new option called “Developer Options” in the settings menu. Where it appears depends on your Android ROM. In most cases, it will be available under Additional settings or About phone
  • Open Developer options and find the option called “USB Debugging”

The simplest method is to use the 15 seconds ADB tool to get the job done.

How to Install ADB and FastBoot Tool?

Now that we have already downloaded the required files and enabled developer options and USB debugging in our smartphone, let’s install ADB on Windows.

Step 1: Right-click on the adb-setup.exe file we downloaded earlier and click on ‘Run as administrator’.

Now you will be presented with a CMD interface with some command lines. Don’t worry, I will guide you on installing the same on your computer.

Step 2: At first, it will ask “Do you want to install ADB and Fastboot?”, type Y and hit enter

Step 3: Then it will ask whether you want to install ADB System-wide? just press Y and hit enter

Step 4: Finally type Y and hit enter to install required device drivers

Step 5: Now a device driver installation setup dialog box will appear, just click on Next

Step 6: Within a matter of fraction of seconds, driver will be installed, just click on Finish to close it.

Now, we have successfully installed and setup ADB and Fastboot Drivers on our Windows computer/laptop.

Next time onwards, when you connect your device (in fastboot mode) to your computer, it will automatically detect the device. For some reason, if it does not detect automatically, here’s a quick workaround for that.

Just in case ADB does not detect your device, just follow the steps.

  • Connect your device to Windows computer/laptop using USB cable while in fastboot mode
  • Open Windows search and type Device manager
  • Open Device Manager and look for the connected device
  • You will find something like “Unknown Device”
  • Right-click on it and select “Update Driver Software…”
  • Click on “Search my computer for driver software”

What is ADB?

ADB stands for Android Debug Bridge. It simply acts as a medium to link your smartphone and computer to do various system-level operations on your smartphone. We cannot directly modify our smartphone’s system files while the phone is turned on. This is where we use ADB and Fastboot Drivers and tools to get the job done. You can perform various tasks with the help of easy to understand command lines in a few steps.

What is Fastboot in Android?

Chances are you might have heard about Fastboot at least once in your life. If you want to make modifications to the Android file system then you need to use a tool called Fastboot. With the help of Fastboot, you can do a number of things like unlocking bootloader, etc. You can only use your computer to make modifications on your Android device while it is in Fastboot mode.

Now you have got a basic idea about both Fastboot and ADB. There is nothing much complex here.

Similarly, there is also something called Minimal ADB and Fastboot Tool.
