From the 1st of April 2021, PayPal will shut down all its domestic payment options in India. As you might be already aware, a number of different businesses and online portals use PayPal as a payment option, but that’s soon going to change.
For the last few days, PayPal users in India received an email like the below stating that Paypal is shutting down its domestics payments services in the country.
“We would like to share an important update regarding your PayPal services.
Firstly, we would like to assure you that you can continue to use PayPal to send and receive international payments. However, effective 1 April 2021, PayPal will no longer offer domestic payment services in India. As a result of this, you will not be able to receive INR payments from other PayPal Payments Private Limited users. As stated above, this has no impact on PayPal’s international services, and you can continue to send and receive international payments in line with our User Agreeement.
India is an important market for PayPal, and we will continue to invest in product development here that enables Indian businesses to increase their sales internationally. In light of the current market conditions, we believe PayPal can have the greatest impact in helping to revive Indian businesses by focusing all our attention on enabling international payments. This change to your PayPal account will be implemented automatically and no action is required from you.”
Online business and websites like BookMyShow, online food delivery service Swiggy, online hotels, and flight booking website MakeMyTrip has been accepting PayPal as a payment method. That means you could use your PayPal account to pay on any of these aforementioned sites. But, as PayPal is halting its domestic payment services in India, this will no longer work.
One more thing to be noted is that it only affects domestic payments within the country. Users will be able to send or receive funds from or to any other currencies like USD, EUR, etc.
