Months after launching the Snapdragon 888 chip, Qualcomm has officially announced and launched the Snapdragon 870. Snapdragon 870 SoC is a slightly better version of Snapdragon 865+ which was launched last year. The maximum processing speed of the new processor is 3.2GHz. There are some other improvements and changes as well.
What’s new in Snapdragon 870?
Snapdragon 870 is an octa-core SoC based on the 7nm fabrication technology. The first one and most powerful is the Coretex-A77 core with a clock speed of 3.2GHz, three Cortex-A77 cores clocked at 2.4GHz and finally, four Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. As far as the GPU side of things is concerned, it is the Adreno 650 GPU that is used on the latest offering from Qualcomm.
The ISP or Image Processor used in the SoC is Qualcomm Spectra 480 that supports up to 200-megapixel photo capture. 8K Video Recording at 30 fps and 4K, 1080, 720p videos recording are also supported.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 SoC comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon Elite Gaming Technology to further enhance mobile gaming and give a better experience, which will be a welcome change for all gamers out there. 5th generation Qualcomm AI engine is also used in the SoC to carry out AI-related tasks more fluently.
As far as the connectivity side of things is concerned, it supports, 5G, WiFi 6, and Bluetooth 5.2. For 5G, the Snapdragon X60 modem is used.
Snapdragon 870 will support up to 4K at 60Hz or QHD+ at 144Hz. For RAM, it supports both LPDDR5 memory with up to a clocking frequency of 2750Mhz and LPDDR4X memory (2133MHz) as well. For charging, Snapdragon 870 comes with support for fast charging 4+ support only and you are not getting the fast charging 5 support similar to Snapdragon 888.
We can expect smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 870 SoC to hit the market during Q1 2021 itself. It will include smartphones from brands like OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo, Motorola, IQOO, etc.
