After India, the US might be the next market that TikTok is going to lose. A couple of days back TikTok and other 58 Chinese apps were banned in India taking privacy issues into concern. New reports suggest that the US might be planning to completely ban TikTok.
The US government has already given a friendly warning to all US users using TikTok. “Use TikTok only if they want their private information in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party“, said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
Pompeo told Fox News, “We are taking this very seriously and we are certainly looking at it. We have worked on this very issue for a long time, whether its the problem of having Huawei technology in your infrastructure — we’ve gone all over the world and we are making real progress getting that out — we had declared ZTE a danger to American national security.”
Pompeo has not exactly mentioned TikTok, but the actions tell so. In reply to this statement, a TikTok spokesperson said, “TikTok is led by an American CEO, with hundreds of employees and key leaders across safety, security, product, and public policy here in the U.S. We have no higher priority than promoting a safe and secure app experience for our users. We have never provided user data to the Chinese government, nor would we do so if asked.”
This is the exact same thing told by the TikTok CEO when India banned TikTok. Just yesterday, TikTok stopped its services in Hong Kong due to the Chinese government’s new legislation.
TikTok officials claim that the Chinese government has not approached them asking users’ data. Even if they do so, everything will be highly secured and no data will be shared with anyone.
